Professional and Industry Bodies

  • The Education and Training Foundation
    What it is
    The ETF is a guild for further education practitioners. It’s main aim, as stated on its website, is to, “enhance the status of the sector by providing a single body to set professional standards and codes of behaviour, and develop qualifications.” The ETF replaced the Institute for Learning.
    What it does
    For PGCE students and teachers the most important role the foundation plays is in setting professional standards.  It also provides the only route for gaining QTLS status via the Foundation Professional Membership Service. The foundation also supports practitioners, colleges and other institutions through various projects, research and reports.
  • FETL
    What it is
    The Further Education Trust for Leadership is an independent charity and think tank. Its aim is to encourage opportunities to develop research and understanding of the further education sector.
    What it does
    The trust provides fellowships and grants to individuals and organisations for projects that develop the understanding of leadership in further education.
  • JISC
    What it is
    Joint Information Systems Committee is an charitable organisation that champions the use of digital technology in education.
    What it does
    JISC provides a huge number of free resources related to using technology to enhance education. This includes a range of guides for teachers to make best use of technology and links to journals, e-books and other digital content.
  • NIACE
    What it is
    The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education is, “the national voice for lifelong learning”.  It is a development organisation and think-tank.
    What it does
    The NIACE campaigns for adults to have access to lifelong learning. It conducts research into the inequalities present in lifelong education. NIACE publishes a wide range of journals and books available here.
  • NRDC
    What it is
    The National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numeracy. “NRDC is the national independent centre for adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL. Its aim is to improve professional practice and inform policy, from a robust evidence base.”
    What it does
    The NRDC produces a range of resources and reports that are available to download free of charge. Particularly useful for practitioners are guides on topics such as ESOL, using ICT and responding to learners’ lives.
  • Ufi
    What it is
    The University for Industry charitable trust. Born out of the sale of learndirect, this body aims to provide funding for initiatives that use technology to widen accessibility for adult learners.
    What it does
    The site provides a number of primers that introduce topics related to social media, learning and technology.

  • The Excellence Gateway
    What it is
    An online repository of resources useful for people working in the further education sector supported by the ETF.
    What it does
    This site stores and organises a huge array of resources. This not only includes lesson resources (such as lesson plans, activities, schemes of work etc.), but also resources for professional development (such as reports, guides, training materials etc.).
  • Open Culture
    What it is
    “The best free cultural & educational media on the web”. High-quality cultural and educational media all gathered in one place.
    What it does
    A massive collection of free to use and non-copyright materials that includes e-books, online courses, images, recordings, videos and more.
  • Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies
    Jane Hart’s site contains information on new trends in technology and education. As well as articles, books and presentations, there are also two very useful sections of the site: the directory of learning and performance tools and the top 100 tools of the year.

  • Geoff Petty
    Practical guides to evidence based teaching methods
  • TeachMeet
    Organised, but informal meetings by and for teachers to share good practice. Website is difficult to navigate.
